YASMIN TAWNGDEE
OPTOMETRIST l BBIOMEDSCI (HONS) | BOPTOM (HONS) l TPA
Yasmin is a therapeutically qualified optometrist who is passionate about providing thorough, personalised eyecare and helping patients feel informed and confident about their vision and eye health.
Originally from Wellington, Yasmin completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science (First Class Honours) at the University of Otago. Although she loved the sciences and was fascinated by clinical research, she knew she would thrive in a profession that combined science with direct patient care. After being offered a place in the University of Auckland Optometry programme, she quickly discovered she had found exactly that. Yasmin went on to achieve her Bachelor of Optometry with First Class Honours. Her strong academic performance was recognised with several awards, including the Raymond Harry Hawkins Prize for the top undergraduate optometry research project and the Michael Kallionatis Prize, awarded by the New Zealand Association of Optometrists to the student entering their final year with the highest academic marks.
Yasmin began her optometry career in south Auckland, where she gained experience caring for a diverse community with a wide range of visual and eye health needs. Working in this setting highlighted the significant impact that conditions such as keratoconus and diabetic eye disease can have on quality of life, sparking her particular interest in specialised contact lenses and the early detection and management of ocular disease. Joining the clinical team at Mortimer Hirst was an exciting opportunity to further develop these interests within a practice renowned for its clinical excellence and innovation.
Yasmin believes that great eye care is more than just prescribing glasses. She enjoys taking the time to understand each patient’s lifestyle, concerns and visual goals, ensuring every consultation is tailored to the individual. She is committed to building long-term relationships with her patients and empowering them to take an active role in their eye health.
Outside of work, Yasmin enjoys staying active whether it be on a hiking trail, yoga studio or cycling. She also loves to knit, read and travel.
